Strugglers Auxerre, Nantes clash in survival battle
AJ Auxerre vs. FC Nantes begins at 18:00 [GMT+1] on Saturday, April 11, at Stade de l’Abbe-Deschamps.
After a dreadful start to the campaign that yielded 12 points from their opening 19 Ligue 1 matches [3W, 3D, 13L], Auxerre have shown signs of life in recent months. Since the start of February, they have recorded 11 points from nine fixtures [2W, 5D, 2L], offering renewed hope in their fight for survival. Despite that improvement, Christophe Pélissier’s side remains in the relegation play-off position, sitting 16th with 25 points [5W, 8D, 15L]—four points adrift of 15th-placed Nice ahead of this game week. Les Ajaïstes’ latest outing produced a 1-1 draw at Le Havre, a result that extended their steady but unspectacular run of form [DDLWD]. Returning to the Stade Abbé- Deschamps could provide the lift they need. Following an impressive 3-0 home win against Brest last month, AJA will be aiming to secure consecutive home victories for the first time since the opening half of the 2024/25 campaign. However, their recent head-to-head record against Nantes offers limited encouragement. Les Ajaïstes have won only two of the last ten competitive meetings between the sides [2W, 2D, 6L] and have conceded at least once in each of their previous 12 clashes with the Canaries. Lassine Sinayoko may be seen at the attacking end of Auxerre’s 4—4—1—1 formation against Nantes. Injury concerns remain for the hosts, with Lasso Coulibaly, Nathan Buayi-Kiala and Oussama El Azzouzi all unavailable as they continue their recovery spells.
For Nantes, the situation looks increasingly bleak [WLLLD]. The Canaries ended a frustrating run of 13 league matches without a draw [2W, 0D, 11L] last weekend after playing out a goalless stalemate at Metz, the only team below them in the standings. That point leaves the Yellow House 17th with just 18 points [4W, 6D, 17L], five behind Auxerre. Their struggles in the second half of the campaign have been particularly alarming. Nantes have picked up just four points from their last ten league matches, the second-lowest tally in the division during that period. With only seven games left to play—including a daunting trip to league leaders Paris Saint-Germain in their game in hand—the margin for error is quickly disappearing. Goals have also dried up for the visitors, who have failed to score in their last two away matches [0W, 1D, 1L]. Suspension further complicates matters for head coach Vahid Halilhodžić, with Tylel Tati unavailable, while Dehmaine Tabibou and Bahmed Deuff are sidelined. A 4—1—4—1 setup with Ignatius Ganago in attack is expected against Auxerre.
